What Notary Clients Must Know About Acceptable Identification for Notary Services

Notaries may accept federal, state, or tribal government identification documents that are current, in a language understood by the Notary, and bearing the photograph, signature, and physical description of the signer, or a properly stamped passport without a physical description.


Acceptable Forms of Identification for Notary Services

  • State-issued driver's license

  • State-issued identification card

  • U.S. passport issued by the U.S. Department of State

  • U.S. military ID

  • State, county and local government IDs

Unacceptable Forms of Identification for Notary Services

  • Social Security cards

  • Birth or marriage certificates

  • Credit cards

  • School IDs

  • Library cards

  • Temporary driver's licenses

Authenticating a signer’s Identification for Notary Services

Notaries will ask clients to provide an acceptable ID before notarizing their document(s). To ensure the ID is satisfactory, they will need to hold it and read it to confirm it is genuine.


Notaries in all states are responsible for ensuring the identity of their signers and can be subject to civil or criminal liability if they fail to do so.
