Sometimes health problems, physical disability, or simply age make it tough to sign your name. If that’s you or someone you love, don’t worry, Missouri law allows you to use a signature by mark (an "X") as an alternative to writing a full signature, and it’s 100% legal here in Missouri.

The Basics of a Signature by Mark Missouri Notary Appointment

👉 You’ll need two witnesses.

A Signature by Mark Missouri Notary appointment requires two disinterested witnesses (people who don't benefit from your document) who can watch you sign with your “X.” Both witnesses must sign their names next to the mark on the document and should also sign the Notary's journal.

👉 You’ll sign in front of the Notary.

You'll make your "X" in the Notary's presence so the Notary can confirm it’s really you.

👉 The Notary must add specific wording below the mark.

Missouri law requires the Notary to make a specific note below the mark. That way, no one can question if it’s legally valid.

👉 Bring valid ID.

Even if you’re signing with an “X,” you’ll still need a valid identification that is current, in a language understood by the Notary, and bearing the photograph, signature, and physical description of the signer, or a properly stamped passport without a physical description.

👉 Know what you’re signing.

The Notary will check to make sure you understand the document and that you’re signing willingly. If not, the process will pause until everything is clear.
